BALLACK GUIDES GERMANY INTO QUARTERS

GERMANS ENTERED YET ANOTHER QUARTERS THROUGH BALLACK'S 49TH MINUTE FREE KICK. CO-HOSTS AUSTRIA ARE THE LOOSING SIDE. SCORES 1-0. GERMANY MAINTAINED THEIR BIG TOURNAMENT QUARTER SLOT RECORD WHILE AUSTRIA FOLLOWED SWIZTERLAND TO THE FENCE.

It was Ballack's 37 th international goal,he admitted his team have not been at their best in the last two matches but he is now looking forward to the next challenge. "Obviously we're happy to have made it to the quarter-finals, particularly after the difficult match against Croatia,"he added. "We had everything to lose when we were certainly favourites to win. You could tell that the team were not as agile because they had tensed up. I'm looking forward to playing Portugal again – we met them in the third-place play-off at the [2006 FIFA] World Cup and I'm looking forward to squaring off against them again. We didn't play as well as we wanted but I'm convinced this victory will give us the push to play even better against Portugal."
